Sport & Activity for ASN & disabled children

Course description:
As part of Scottish Disability Sport’s Education and Training Programme, this training is designed to bring physical activity and sport opportunities to children and young people with a range of disabilities. The course provides attendees with the confidence to positively include children and young people with a disability in physical activity and sport. The course will cover disability sports, individual activities and team games giving participants the opportunity to use their own skills to adapt and deliver different sports and activities. The course will be delivered by the Grampian Scottish Disability Sport Officers and post-course support (e.g. sourcing funding for equipment) will be provided through Moray’s Active Schools team.

Clubgolf

Suitable for: Teachers and support staff involved with the P5 year group.
Course description:
Clubgolf is a national programme that was set up on the back of a Scottish Government pledge that every child in Scotland would be given the chance to experience the game of golf by the age of 9. It is intended that the programme be delivered by class teachers to all P5 pupils during curriculum time, to enable maximum participation. However, some schools offer Clubgolf as an after school activity. Between 4 to 6 introductory sessions are delivered in schools then the children are given the opportunity to progress to a local golf club, where a further block of sessions are delivered by qualified coaches at each participating golf club, establishing a link between the school and that club. By attending this course you will be provided with all necessary information to lead the introductory programme in schools, with support provided by Active Schools.

Sport for Early Years

Suitable for: Teachers and support staff involved with the P1-3 age groups
Course description:
An introduction to the basic elements of three sports: football, cricket & jogscotland and demonstrations of how they can be adapted for young children. The focus is very much on fun, not competition, and activities are designed to be delivered during hall-time by class teachers in order to augment existing PE. The aim is to create a sporting pathway from early to later primary, where opportunities to play these sports in a more competitive setting are offered. The course will be delivered by local experts in the field (football development officer, jogscotland tutor and community cricket coach) and a comprehensive resource pack with ideas for warm-ups and games will be provided for participants.

Elevating Athletics (Activity Skills for early Years)

Suitable for: Teachers and support staff involved with the P1-3 age groups
Course description:
Elevating Athletics is a Curriculum resource pack designed to assist teachers in the development of children’s athleticism and movement skills through the core skills of running and jumping. These core skills will benefit children in whatever sports or activities they choose to engage in as they get older. Elevating Athletics contains many short simple activities that can be delivered on a little-and-often basis throughout the day (hold a balance on one-foot competition while waiting in a queue for example or use any of the simple warm up games as the topic for brain breaks), or as a standalone session during hall time. All of the activities develop some aspect of fundamental movement skills and could be delivered throughout the year. The course will be delivered by a tutor from scottishathletics and a comprehensive resource pack with ideas for warm-ups and games will be provided for participants.

John Muir Award Leader training

Suitable for: Teachers and support staff involved in any age group, including nursery
Course description:
The John Muir Award is an environmental award scheme focused on wild places. It encourages awareness and responsibility for the natural environment, in a spirit of fun, adventure and exploration. The Award is open to all, and is the educational initiative of the John Muir Trust. Four Challenges are at the heart of each John Muir Award; discover - explore - conserve - share. Attendees will receive a thorough introduction to the relevant skills, knowledge and approaches needed for delivering the John Muir Award scheme. Ready Steady Bike

Suitable for: Teachers and support staff involved with the P1- 4 age group
Course Description:
Ready Steady Bike (RSB) is a programme developed by Cycling Scotland with the aim of developing young pupils’ cycle skills in a playground environment. RSB offers the lower primaries the first steps to become competent cyclists not only for the near future but also into adulthood. RSB naturally leads into the Cycling Proficiency programme delivered in later primary school. After the course the participants should be able to deliver confidently a 4 to 6 week block in essential cycling skills such as braking, balancing, steering and use of gears. Normally after a block of 4 weeks there is a major improvement in pupils’ cycling skills, leading to increased confidence on the bike. Participants will be provided with all the necessary information and support to lead the programme in schools.

‘Rugby Ready’ Practical Course

Suitable for: Teachers and support staff involved with any age group
Course Description:
Suitable for staff wishing to introduce rugby in a school setting, the Scottish Rugby Union’s ‘Rugby Ready’ Practical Course is designed to meet the needs of all participants in the game by providing a minimum standard of awareness and good practice techniques. The intended learning outcomes will only be achieved if and when workshop participants follow-up with implementing what they have learned on return to their club or school – they will be supported in this by the local rugby development officer and their Active Schools Coordinator.
The course will include an introduction to:

  4. Tackling
  5. The Lineout
  6. Long Term Player Development

The course will be delivered by the Grampian SRU Development Officer.

Scottish Country Dance for Primary Staff

Suitable for: Teachers and staff involved with primary aged children
Course Description:
To train, support and advise teachers and support staff to teach ceilidh and Scottish country dancing to primary school aged pupils by providing staff with a background to ceilidh and Scottish country dancing. Teachers and support staff will be shown the steps, formations and dances necessary to demonstrate confidently to pupils in the primary school. The course will also advise staff of the music required for ceilidh and Scottish country dancing as well as providing advice for setting up classes in ceilidh and Scottish country dancing. The course will be delivered by Anne McArthur, Teacher and Medal Test Assessor of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society.

Street Dance for Primary Staff

Suitable for: Teachers and support staff involved with primary school-aged pupils
Course Description:
This street dance master class will arm participants with the knowledge, tools and stimulus to choreograph/teach their own dance routines as well as providing pre-choreographed routines ready to use. The course will also provide a logical framework to educate children about healthy living through dance. During the session participants will work in groups to make up their very own dance sequences - great preparation for Christmas shows and Christmas parties! Participants will receive a training manual with all course content. The course will be delivered by LifeFit’s professional dance instructors.

Teaching Orienteering Part 1

Teachers and support staff involved with any age group
Course description:
An introduction to the basic skills of orienteering to beginners, enabling them to deliver orienteering-based activities and simple competitions within school grounds. Orienteering is the perfect outdoor activity for schools, combining skills in maths and geography with physical activity; participants will be able to identify ways in which orienteering can assist in curriculum delivery. Great preparation for the ASG & Moray-wide schools orienteering festivals. Participants will be accredited with the British Orienteering Federation's Teaching Orienteering Part 1 certification.

This course is a pre-requisite for individuals wishing to undertake the Teaching Orienteering Part 2 course run later in the year.

Teaching Orienteering Part 2

Suitable for: Teachers and support staff who have already attended the Teaching Orienteering Part 1 course earlier in the year
Course description:
As a follow on from the Part 1 course delivered earlier in the year, attendees will be provided with the knowledge to introduce more advanced orienteering skills, including the delivery of a range of orienteering competitions. While Part 1 qualified attendees to lead orienteering-based activities within school grounds, Part 2 will qualify attendees to lead off-site activities. Participants will be accredited with the British Orienteering Federation's Teaching Orienteering Part 2 certification and is an excellent course for any individual considering undertaking the UKCC Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Orienteering.
