This course provides each candidate with a basic knowledge of basketball. It will cover generic and basketball specific coaching skills, the basic rules of basketball and how to adapt basketball activities and sessions for a variety of different age groups.

The Getting Started Award is basketballscotland's introductory level coaching award. This award is designed to assist individuals who are interested in coaching basketball but want to know more. Examples of persons who may be interested in this award are:
The Getting Started Award focuses on coaching beginners and young players, with a view to introducing them to basketball. The course lasts 6 hours. During each course candidates will be continually assessed and given feedback on their knowledge of introducing individual skills. Candidates receive a Getting Started Manual and certificate following the successful completion of the award. Please remember that, even though the course will enhance your basketball skills, the Getting Started Award is for individuals wanting to coach others.

The UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) aims to support coaches to develop their 'how to' skills while integrating various technical and tactical areas of the sport. The UKCC offer 4 levels as listed below: Please note that the Getting Started course sits outwith this structure.
This is the basic level of coaching qualification for those who wish to commit to coaching basketball. This course provides each candidate with the basic knowledge of basketball and coaching skills and will enable the holder to assist a fully qualified Level 2 Coach.

The Level 1 course costs £170 per candidate. Candidates can apply for basketballscotland scholarships which will reduce the cost of courses by 65% to £60!! Please note that scholarships will be allocated to successful applicants on completion of the course (i.e. candidates are required to pay the £170 upfront intially). Basketball Scotland Scholarships
This level of coaching qualification provides a prospective coach with a general overview of all aspects of basketball and sports coaching and enables the holder the ability to work independently to plan, deliver and review basketball coaching sessions without supervision. The National Source Group are currently working to develop the Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Basketball
What benefits to Coaches will the changes bring?
What happens to existing qualifications? Exisiting coaching awards will no longer be delivered (please note the the Getting Started course sits outwith the UKCC structure). Holders of coaching awards prior to January 2008 will be still be valid for a set time period. The date is yet to be agreed. Bridging packs will be produced for the Level 2 and Level 3 awards to cover the knowledge gaps that exist between the old awards and the new UKCC coaching qualifications. Completion of the pack represents Phase 1 of converting to the new qualification. Phase 2 will involve applying for assessment. Details of this process are yet to be confirmed.
