Basketball – Drills & Skills Workshop

Course Description: This course provides each candidate with a basic knowledge of basketball. It will cover generic and basketball specific coaching skills, the basic rules of basketball and how to adapt basketball activities and sessions for a variety of different age groups.

Getting Started

The Getting Started Award is basketballscotland's introductory level coaching award. This award is designed to assist individuals who are interested in coaching basketball but want to know more. Examples of persons who may be interested in this award are:

  • Senior School Pupils
  • FE/Higher Ed Students
  • Youth Workers
  • Parents
  • Teachers

The Getting Started Award focuses on coaching beginners and young players, with a view to introducing them to basketball. The course lasts 6 hours. During each course candidates will be continually assessed and given feedback on their knowledge of introducing individual skills. Candidates receive a Getting Started Manual and certificate following the successful completion of the award. Please remember that, even though the course will enhance your basketball skills, the Getting Started Award is for individuals wanting to coach others.

Learning Outcomes

Unit 1 - Introduction At the completion of this unit candidates must be:

  1. Aware of the requirements of the Getting Started Award.
  2. Aware of the roles of a coach.
  3. Able to demonstrate an understanding of Coaching and teaching skills.
  4. Able to undertake a coaching session in a safe manner and deal with signs of injury.
  5. Aware of planning for a coaching session that meets the needs of the players being coached.
  6. Plan a session that satisfies health and safety requirements.
  7. Prepare players to take part in a training session.
  8. Take a warm-up and cool-down with players.

Unit 2 - Individual Skills At the completion of this unit candidates must be:

  1. Able to introduce the game to beginners.
  2. Able to provide demonstration of the basic individual skills of basketball.
  3. Able to give instructions to players when coaching.
  4. Able to observe performance, give feedback and encourage progression.
  5. Able to evaluate a coaching session

UKCC Courses

The UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) aims to support coaches to develop their 'how to' skills while integrating various technical and tactical areas of the sport. The UKCC offer 4 levels as listed below: Please note that the Getting Started course sits outwith this structure.

UKCC Level 1

This is the basic level of coaching qualification for those who wish to commit to coaching basketball. This course provides each candidate with the basic knowledge of basketball and coaching skills and will enable the holder to assist a fully qualified Level 2 Coach.

On successful completion of the Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Basketball, candidates should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an ability to safely organise and supervise basketball activities, including group coaching and using pre-planned coaching session cards
  • Promote and establish working relationships and high standards of behaviour with players, coaches, parents and officials in the overall development of basketball
  • Demonstrate an understanding of: generic coaching skills, basketball-specific coaching skills, coach and performer/player development, health and safety, working with parents, basic rules/laws of basketball, demonstrate an ability to identify and adapt basketball activities and sessions for a variety of different age groups and demonstrate an awareness of further personal development opportunities in basketball

The Level 1 course costs £170 per candidate. Candidates can apply for basketballscotland scholarships which will reduce the cost of courses by 65% to £60!! Please note that scholarships will be allocated to successful applicants on completion of the course (i.e. candidates are required to pay the £170 upfront intially). Basketball Scotland Scholarships

UKCC Level 2

This level of coaching qualification provides a prospective coach with a general overview of all aspects of basketball and sports coaching and enables the holder the ability to work independently to plan, deliver and review basketball coaching sessions without supervision. On successful completion of the courses, candidates should be able to:

  • Establish an effective, fair and equitable coaching environment
  • Establish a safe coaching environment
  • Revire participants needs and establish goals for coaching sessions
  • Produce plans for sessions that support participants development
  • Plan for the evaluation of sessions
  • Prepare participants for coaching sessions
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with participants and others
  • Deliver coaching sessions
  • Develop participants performance
  • Conclude coaching sessions
  • Evaluate participants performance and the effectiveness of sessions
  • Monitor personal coaching practice

The Level 2 course costs £350 per candidate. Candidates can apply for basketballscotland scholarships which will reduce the cost of the course by 73% to £90!! Please note that scholarships will be allocated to successful applicants on completion of the course (i.e. candidates will be required to pay the £350 up front intially). UKCC Level 3

The National Source Group are currently working to develop the Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Basketball

What benefits to Coaches will the changes bring?

  • The qualifications have been designed to meet the needs of our coaches and vitally our players at the appropriate levels
  • The Basketball UKCC levels are recognised qualifications that will sit on the Scottish Qualifications Framework
  • The qualifications will meet the UKCC endorsed quality standard
  • The coach tutors, assessors and verifiers are fully trained and accredited to deliver the best quality course for the candidates

What happens to existing qualifications? Exisiting coaching awards will no longer be delivered (please note the the Getting Started course sits outwith the UKCC structure). Holders of coaching awards prior to January 2008 will be still be valid for a set time period. The date is yet to be agreed. Bridging packs will be produced for the Level 2 and Level 3 awards to cover the knowledge gaps that exist between the old awards and the new UKCC coaching qualifications. Completion of the pack represents Phase 1 of converting to the new qualification. Phase 2 will involve applying for assessment. Details of this process are yet to be confirmed.
